International Women in Engineering 2022

Today marks the 9th International Women in Engineering Day. A global day to celebrate women in engineering and give women engineers a profile when they are still a hugely under-represented. This year's theme focusses on inventors and innovators, celebrating those women who are part of the solution towards building a brighter future.

We are proud at Sigmat to have a number of talented female engineers, from junior apprentices up to Director-level. As we look to inspire the next generation, we spoke to a couple of our women Engineers about what they love about their structural engineering roles.

Speaking to Nadein, our Technical Assistant, who commented on her role within engineering " I love how rewarding the role is - being surrounded with positive minds who are eager to find a structural solution, it's inspiring. There is always something new and so much to learn - it makes every day exciting!"

Sarah Stone, our Head of Structural Design, has been with us for over 10 years and worked on a number of prestigious developments, commented "There's a real sense of accomplishment when you drive down a road and recognise a building as your own. If anyone is considering a career within structural engineering and particularly at Sigmat - its a varied career path and has opportunities to help out with R&D, pre-con and ultimately the design of the buildings"

Inspiring the next generation

We are proud to have a several apprentices across the business who work across a variety of roles. Recently, our Apprentice Structural Engineer, Izzie, delivered a speech at Skipton Girls High School, where she was previously a student, to talk to students about her route into engineering, options presented and resilience.

"A career in engineering is an extremely empowering role, I've thoroughly enjoyed everything I have done so far. The work itself is complex which can pose a challenge. For me, the greatest challenge is to persevere when work feels tough and to remember 'this too shall pass'!" Following a successful year long apprenticeship with Sigmat, Izzie joined the team on a permanent basis last year and has been involved in several projects to date.

We're proud to be raising the profile of women engineers!
